Another match-fixing storm has rocked Bangladesh cricket as the Bangladesh Cricket Board’s Anti-Corruption Unit has recommended a minimum five-year ban for batter Minhazul Abedin Sabbir. The proposal comes after a detailed investigation into Shinepukur Cricket Club’s Dhaka Premier League game against Gulshan Cricket earlier this year.

The match raised suspicion after two bizarre dismissals. Rahim Ahmed was stumped cheaply in the 36th over, while Sabbir shocked spectators in the 44th when he crouched inside his crease and offered no resistance, gifting the wicketkeeper a stumping. The ACU report stated that Sabbir not only engaged with suspected bookmakers but also failed to report approaches, breaching multiple clauses of the board’s Anti-Corruption Code.

The case has been forwarded to the BCB Anti-Corruption Tribunal for formal hearings. In case found guilty, Sabbir is subject to a ban of up to ten years, and he is to undergo a rehabilitation process in case he is to come back. The ACU has also proposed to have stricter measures within domestic cricket such as more stringent communication controls within dressing rooms and more surveillance during important matches.

This case, officials believe, is a strong reminder of the threat corruption poses to Bangladesh cricket. Fans following the latest updates and live action from around the cricketing world can stay connected with tapmad to read breaking news and watch matches live.
