Bangladesh suffered a shocking batting collapse as Sri Lanka seized control of the first ODI with a commanding 77-run victory at the R. Premadasa Stadium. Sri Lanka plunged Bangladesh into turmoil by capturing seven wickets for just five runs during a dramatic late collapse.

Sri Lanka captain Charith Asalanka led the charge, anchoring his side with a composed 106, including four sixes. His innings guided Sri Lanka to a competitive 244 all out, after only 4.4 overs remained.

Bangladesh’s early aggression lulled Sri Lanka into batting again at 1/100 in the 17th over, following a solid 71-run stand between Najmul Hossain Shanto and Tanzid Hasan.

The tide turned with Milan Rathnayake’s sharp run-out of Shanto, a defining moment that rattled Bangladesh’s rhythm.

Spin duo Wanindu Hasaranga and Kamindu Mendis capitalised, tearing through the rest of the lineup:

  • Hasaranga returned brilliant figures: 4 wkts/10 runs

  • Mendis delivered career-best 3 wkts/19 runs

Bangladesh fell from 1/100 to all out for 167 inside 36 overs—a result of just seven wickets for five runs as Sri Lanka closed with a huge margin.

Sri Lanka celebrated a comprehensive win, with Asalanka’s century and the spin unit praised across social channels. Analysts noted that once the run-out happened, Bangladesh capitulated under spin pressure.

Bangladesh’s batting, which appeared confident early on, collapsed under Srilanka’s home advantage, leaving fans and pundits calling for improved middle-order resilience and planning.

  • Second ODI scheduled for Friday, where Bangladesh must reassess middle-order strategy.

  • Sri Lanka aims to build momentum and push for an early series win through disciplined fielding and spin tactics.

  • Bangladeshi selectors will need to address weakness in handling spin and late-game shattered confidence.
