In the wake of Cheteshwar Pujara announcing his retirement from all forms of cricket at just 37, Australian captain Alyssa Healy expressed genuine surprise at the timing of his departure. “I didn’t realise he was only 37,” she remarked during a conversation on the LISTNR Sport YouTube channel, adding that she believed the Indian Test stalwart still had several years left in him.

Healy went beyond the numbers to praise Pujara’s invaluable contributions to India’s historic Test series wins in Australia. She said: “He was a huge part of those two series wins in Australia. He kept their bowling attack out and drained them, making them work so hard. By the end of it, they stopped trying to get him out and only tried to get the other end out because they just figured it was too hard.”

Her words highlight how Pujara’s endurance and unyielding technique not only depleted bowling attacks but also altered game dynamics.

Pujara’s meticulous and patient style made him a rock at No. 3 for India, particularly in overseas conditions. His retirement marks the end of a storied career forged through grit, resilience, and selfless company building. As Healy suggested, his absence leaves a void, not just in run tallies, but in the unwavering temperamental backbone of Test batting.
