Arman Tsarukyan Defeats Mauricio Ruffy via First-Round KO at UFC 331

Arman Tsarukyan Defeats Mauricio Ruffy via First-Round KO at UFC 331

Arman Tsarukyan strengthened his case for another UFC lightweight title opportunity with a first-round stoppage of Mauricio Ruffy in the co-main event of UFC 331 in Los Angeles.

Ruffy made a strong start and connected with a hard right hand that left a bruise beneath Tsarukyan's left eye. The Brazilian also managed to defend most of Tsarukyan's early takedown attempts, forcing the Armenian to look for another route to control the fight.

That opening came late in the round when Tsarukyan backed Ruffy against the cage. After failing to complete several takedowns, Tsarukyan attacked from the clinch and landed a left elbow to Ruffy's face, followed by a right elbow as he fell.

Referee Jason Herzog stopped the contest at 4:56 of the first round. Arman Tsarukyan defeats Mauricio Ruffy at UFC 331, extending his winning streak to six fights and improving his professional record to 24-3.

Ruffy entered the contest with 14 career victories, including 13 by knockout, but could not withstand Tsarukyan's pressure in the final exchanges. The defeat leaves him with a 14-3 record.

The victory is significant for Tsarukyan after his title hopes stalled following his withdrawal from a scheduled championship fight against Islam Makhachev one day before the bout in January 2025. He was subsequently overlooked for two other lightweight title opportunities despite holding the No. 1 ranking at the time.

UFC president and CEO Dana White had previously said Tsarukyan would need to rebuild his position after the withdrawal. White said, "He had an opportunity, and you guys saw how that played out. He's going to have to work his way back. I don't give a s--- what the [ranking] number says."

Tsarukyan appeared determined to make his intentions clear after the stoppage. He climbed over the Octagon fence, shook White's hand and then gestured around his waist as if indicating a championship belt.

"For my next fight, for the title fight, I need that finish and I knew that I'm going to finish him," Tsarukyan said. "Yeah, it was a little bit difficult in the first round, but I knew that I have five rounds and my time was going to come. So I was patient."

The Arman Tsarukyan vs Mauricio Ruffy matchup therefore ended with Tsarukyan adding another stoppage victory to his record and renewing his push for a place in the lightweight title picture.
