Fast bowler Jofra Archer is edging closer to a comeback in England's Test side and could feature in the second Test against India, starting 2 July in Birmingham.

After nearly a four‑year absence from the longer format, due to elbow, back, and thumb injuries, Archer made a highly anticipated return to red‑ball cricket in the County Championship for Sussex. He impressed with a 31‑run cameo and, more importantly, resumed bowling in Sussex nets, raising England’s hopes for a timely return.

Selector Luke Wright has confirmed Archer is under serious consideration for the second Test, provided he shows readiness in upcoming County matches. His inclusion could offer a much‑needed pace boost for the bowling unit. According to Reuters, England captain Ben Stokes also expressed optimism about Archer’s pace and structured return to red‑ball duties.

If Archer is selected for the second Test, he would make his return to Test cricket at Edgbaston. That would add fresh pace and bounce, reinforcing England’s attack as they chase a series win. For Archer himself, it would mark a triumphant comeback after a four‑year rehab journey, readying him for a full summer and the looming Ashes assignment.

Stats & context

  • Archer has taken 42 wickets in just 13 Tests, averaging 31.4 per match.
  • His last Test match was in February 2021 before a string of injuries sidelined him.
  • A fit Archer would rejoin a pace lineup missing the experience of Mark Wood and Gus Atkinson.
