South African cricket legend AB de Villiers, who retired from all forms of the game in 2021, has sparked excitement among fans by suggesting he may one day return to the Indian Premier League, but as a coach or mentor for Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB).

De Villiers was clear that a full-time professional role is off the table for now: “A full season in a professional capacity is really tricky, and I believe those days are done.”

Yet, his heart remains firmly with RCB:  “My heart is with RCB and always will be. So, if the franchise feels there’s a role for me… it will definitely be RCB.”

The announcement touches on a deeper bond with RCB, one that defined both the league and his illustrious career. Between 2011 and 2021, de Villiers racked up 4,522 runs in 157 matches for RCB, posting an average of 41.10 and striking at 158.33.

His storied tenure includes iconic partnerships, including a record 229-run stand with Virat Kohli that still resonates among fans.

While not ready for daily professional duties, de Villiers leaves the door ajar for a meaningful return in a different capacity. Offering experience, calm, and mentorship to a squad full of promise.
