In the 33rd match of the ODI World Cup between India and Sri Lanka, Shubman Gill achieved a significant milestone that has overshadowed Pakistan's Babar Azam in the 2023 season. This young Indian opener played a resilient innings, contributing significantly to India's formidable total at the iconic Wankhede Stadium.

Gill, partnering with the Indian cricket maestro Virat Kohli, was instrumental in crafting a stellar second-wicket partnership of 189 runs. This partnership etched a new record in the annals of cricket history as the highest partnership for India in a World Cup game on home soil.

While Kohli displayed his brilliance with 88 runs off 94 balls, it was Shubman Gill who truly stole the show, securing the top score for India with a fantastic run-a-ball 92. This exceptional feat propelled him ahead of both Babar Azam and Sri Lanka's Pathum Nissanka in the run-scoring charts for the 2023 season.

Shubman Gill has now etched his name as the batsman with the most 50-plus scores in the 2023 season of ODIs. Throughout the year, Gill has notched up an impressive 12 half-centuries in 25 games. Pakistan's captain, Babar Azam, achieved a similar feat with 11 such scores in 23 games, while Sri Lanka's Pathum Nissanka also boasts 11 50-plus scores in 27 games. Renowned cricketers like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli have managed 10 or more 50-plus scores in 2023.

Gill's 2023 season statistics speak volumes about his remarkable form, with a total of over 1420 runs and an impressive average of 67. This includes five centuries and seven half-centuries. In the prestigious ICC World Cup 2023, Gill showcased his prowess by amassing 196 runs in five matches. His performance has certainly etched a memorable chapter in the history of Indian cricket.
