Review of the “Bodies”

The "Bodies" show begins now. Detective Sergeant Shahara Hasan is played by Amaka Okafor. She sees a young man with a gun. It's at a fascist march. She follows him. She finds a naked body. The body has a gunshot wound in the eye.

After that, we go back to 1941. We meet Charles Whiteman, played by Jacob Fortune-Lloyd. He's a Jewish detective. His colleagues are mean to him. He, too, finds the same body. The clock turns once more, this time to 1890. We meet the bearded detective Alfred Hillinghead, played by Kyle Soller. He is in Victorian Whitechapel. He discovers the body in the same alley.

"Bodies" comes from Si Spencer's graphic novel in 2015. It's made to honour his memory. The series remembers its start with split screens like comic book panels. Lights explode, weird things happen, and Stephen Graham is a key mystery element. At first, three timelines compete, but interest goes back to the more satisfying 2023.

Detective Hasan is straightforward. She becomes a focal point for two teenagers connected to the body. She's a single mom balancing work and home, adding a relatable dimension. In contrast, the late Victorian era feels vibrant. It has cheeky sex workers and smouldering looks between Hillinghead and a journalist.

In 1941, the story starts in a funny noir way. Whiteman gets mysterious calls and flirts with station gals. Even with some initial quirks, the show calms down. Shira Haas joins as Iris Maplewood, another detective. The timelines connect, showing a mix of genres—period drama, 40s film noir, tough cop show, and experimental sci-fi.

Hillinghead is an honest cop. He faces trouble after finding the body. Whiteman is not so honest. He loses control when he finds the body. Hasan is followed by a teenager. The teenager claims to know the future. Maplewood's investigation gets a mysterious "red alert." Identities shift in this complex story. It offers a thrilling mix of genres.

"Bodies" is different from other time-travel shows. Netflix has a similar show, and it does well. The show has different styles: old-fashioned drama, 40s detective story, tough cop show, and experimental sci-fi, all in one. It's enjoyable and entertaining to watch.
